What backflow testing protects and why it is required

Under normal conditions, water flows from the public main into your property and out through your fixtures. Backflow is the unwanted reversal of that flow. It can happen when pressure in the main drops suddenly, such as during a main break or heavy firefighting demand, or when pressure on the property side rises above supply pressure. Either way, water that has been in contact with irrigation systems, boilers, chemical equipment or other sources can be drawn back toward the public supply.

Backflow prevention assemblies are designed to stop that reversal. Common types include double check valve assemblies, reduced pressure zone assemblies and pressure vacuum breakers. The type required depends on the degree of hazard. A lawn irrigation system, a commercial kitchen and a building with chemical processes each present different risks, and water providers and plumbing codes set requirements accordingly.

A backflow assembly can look perfectly fine from the outside and still fail its test. Only the gauge tells the truth.

Because these assemblies contain springs, checks and relief valves that can wear or foul over time, they must be tested to confirm they still work. Many water providers require testing at installation, after repairs and on a recurring schedule, often annually. Property owners typically receive a notice with a deadline, and results must be submitted by a tester who holds the certification the provider recognizes.

A test uses a calibrated differential pressure gauge connected to the test cocks on the assembly. The tester measures the pressure differentials across each check valve and, on reduced pressure assemblies, verifies that the relief valve opens at the correct point. The results show whether each component is holding as designed.

Testing temporarily interrupts water service through the assembly. We coordinate timing with you, which matters especially for businesses, medical offices and properties with fire sprinkler connections, where interruptions need planning.

When an assembly fails, it needs repair or replacement before it can pass. Common repairs include cleaning debris from checks, replacing rubber parts and servicing relief valves. After repair, the assembly is retested and the passing result is documented.

Assemblies installed outdoors also need protection from freezing, since freeze damage is a common reason for failure. We can recommend enclosures or seasonal procedures where appropriate, and our Frozen Pipe Repair service helps when cold weather has already caused damage.

Test equipment has to be trustworthy too. Differential pressure gauges used for backflow testing must be checked for accuracy on the schedule the provider or certifying body requires, because an inaccurate gauge can pass an assembly that should fail. Our test kits are maintained and verified so the numbers on your report can be relied upon.

We document results in the format your water provider requests and keep a record for your property. Testing is quoted at a flat rate, and repair costs are provided for approval before any work on a failed assembly begins.

When backflow testing is needed

These situations commonly require a test by a certified tester.

Annual notice from your water provider

Most providers set recurring deadlines for testing and reporting.

New assembly installation

Initial testing confirms the assembly works before it goes into service.

After repairs or relocation

Any service to an assembly requires retesting.

Water discharging from a relief valve

Discharge from a reduced pressure assembly can signal a problem.

Irrigation system start-up

Seasonal systems often need testing when they are put back into use.

Suspected freeze damage

Cold weather can crack bodies and damage internal parts.

How a backflow test is performed

Each test follows a consistent procedure and ends with documentation you can submit.

  1. Schedule and notify

We coordinate timing so water interruptions are expected.

  2. Identify the assembly

Type, size, make and serial number are recorded.

  3. Connect the test kit

A calibrated gauge is attached to the test cocks.

  4. Measure each component

Check valve and relief valve performance is recorded.

  5. Restore service and report

Water service is restored and results are documented for submission.

What affects backflow testing

Assembly type and condition determine the scope of the visit.

Variables in backflow testing
Assembly typeReduced pressure assemblies involve more test steps than double checks.
Number of assembliesProperties with several assemblies require more time.
AccessAssemblies in vaults or tight spaces take longer to reach.
Test resultA failed test adds repair and retest steps.
Reporting requirementsProviders differ in how results must be submitted.

Backflow testing FAQ

Requirements are set by your water provider and local code. Many require testing annually, as well as after installation or repair.

Testing must be performed by a tester holding the certification your water provider recognizes. Results submitted by uncertified testers may not be accepted.

Water flow through the assembly is interrupted briefly during the test. We coordinate timing with you in advance.

It must be repaired or replaced and then retested. We provide a repair quote for your approval before any work begins.

Irrigation water can contact fertilizers and soil. An assembly prevents that water from being drawn back into the public supply.

Changes to assembly type or location usually require approval from the water provider and a new test after installation. We confirm the requirements before recommending a change so the replacement is accepted.

We document results in the format your provider requests and can submit them where the provider allows testers to file on your behalf.
